Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy   Week ending 05.07.24

Posted 05/07/2024
by David Parry

Sports' Day was a big event this week. Each child put in his/her best efforts throughout the day. The comradeship, enthusiasm and dedication oozed throughout. Thank you, Talland Class.

English
The children have been learning how to write a book review. The key points they considered were the actions and characteristics of the main characters, for example: responsibility, friendship, perseverance and bravery. They learned a lot about themselves, too, during the writing of the book review.

Maths
The main theme for this week has been the exploration of polygons (many sided 2-D shapes). The children now recognise the criteria for a regular polygon (all sides and angles equal) and an irregular polygon. They had the opportunity to further their protractor and ruler skills by measuring sides to the nearest centimetre and angles to the nearest degree. Well done, Talland Class.

best wishes,

Mr Parry, Mrs Swabey and the Talland Class team (Mrs Walters and Ms Rowlands)

This week's jokes:

What is harder to catch the faster you run?
 Your breath.

Why can't Cinderella play football? She keeps running away from the ball.

Looe Primary Academy   Releasing Our Butterflies

Posted 05/07/2024
by Helen Hoskin

We have been raising butterflies in our class over the last few weeks. We watched them grow as caterpillars, turn into chrysalis, and then hatch into butterflies! It gave us a hands on understanding of lifecycles.
We have compared the lifecycles of butterflies, ladybirds and ants, noticing differences and similarities.
We took the fully grown butterflies up to the field where there is a conservation meadow area, this was the perfect place to set them free!
We watched as they fluttered away with an enormous sense of pride and joy!

Week Ending 05/07/24

Please follow the link above for maths homework this week. We will send the homework booklet home again when we have covered some shape work in class so that the children can access this.

The children were brilliant in Sports Day this week. Showing a lot of sportsmanship towards their peers made me a very proud teacher!

The children enjoyed tasting different tropical rainforest fruits this week as part of our DT lesson. You can see by their faces how sour some were! They have described the taste and ranked them, as well as learnt about where they have come from in the world. They will use this knowledge to design and create a healthy tropical snack that will entice children to choose a healthy choice.

Well what another amazing week we've had in Canute Class.  The children have al been working so hard and putting their all into every challenge.

In our English this week Year 1 and 2 have been completing their recounts about our trip to the woods, adding some great vocabulary into their sentences to make them really interesting to read.  We have also been spending time talking about our writing before we put our pencils on the page, using each other as an ideas board.

Reception's Drawing Club this week has been based on the story 'What the ladybird heard, at the seaside.'  It is such as great time for the children to dig deep into their imaginations and some amazing ideas have been generated to inspire their writing.

In Maths this week our Reception children have been investigating shapes and how they can be manipulated to create different patterns.  They made some great pictures by placing and rotating shapes.  Year 1 have completed their work on money and have begun to investigate and learn about time.  In Year 2 the children have been completing their work on time, we will continue revisiting this over the next few weeks to ensure a solid understanding.

In Geography we completed our unit exploring the hot and cold places of the world.  We've used atlases to help us locate the seven continents, the North and South Poles and the Equator.  We compared where we live to Kenya and then made a final decision as to whether we would prefer to live in a hot or cold place.

We're looking forward to the upcoming week and sharing our adventures with you.

It was great to see so many of you at sports day on Tuesday – thank you for coming. We were very proud of the way the children joined in, competed and supported each other and of the leaders who ran the morning so well.

Sports Day House Points We added up the house points from the sports day races and awarded others to pupils for exceptional effort, enthusiasm and determination (well done to Jack G, Bayley, Leo, Casey, Hamish, Rosie G, Callum, Thomas, Kai and Dom). The final scores were Chestnut 49; Ash 77; Oak 92 and Willow 102. Congratulations Willow.

Football Success After a busy sports day and swimming lessons in the afternoon, our football team traveled to Burraton School in Saltash where they played their best match of the season. They worked together as a team, attacking and defending as one. Player of the match was Jack C who was also Captain. Final score Polperro 4 - Burraton 1.

Bridge School Games To round off a very successful sporting week, we heard yesterday that we came 2nd overall in the Bridge School Games out of 15 schools. Well done Polperro, another great effort!

Squashbox Theatre Company Today we had a visit from the Squashbox Theatre Company who performed their hilarious and informative ‘The Sea Show’. The visit was kindly funded by the Polperro Arts Foundation.

Garden Update Everything is growing really well in the greenhouse thanks to hard work by our volunteers Mr and Mrs Peters and Gardening Club children with Miss Randle and Mrs Taylor. Our tomatoes were served as part of our school lunch today. You are invited to look round the garden during our school fete (see below).

FOPS Summer Fete – Friday 19th July at 2pm FOPS are busily organising this year’s Summer Fete. Monday 15th July will be a MUFTI day where we will be asking for donations of an item matching your child’s house team colour to create hampers for raffles prizes. Children can wear their own clothes and this could include wearing their house colour. Please see attached posters for suggestions of what to send in for your child’s colour on the day.

TIME 2 MOVE Bookings are now online for Summer activities. Please see further details attached. This is a very busy half term with more exciting events coming up including Penhallow’s Beach Trip on Monday and the year 6 residential trip to the Ultimate Adventure Centre in North Devon next week. Have a lovely weekend.

Brunel Primary and Nursery Academy   Super Sports Day!

Sports Day Smiles!

What an incredible sports day we had at the beginning of the week! We started our 'Brunel Olympics' with a parade around the field - we all waved the brilliant flags from all of the countries taking part in the Olympics this year that we made last week. The year 1 children joined up with year 2 to take part in the quoits race - the children carefully balanced a quoit on their head and competed in a relay race. Next it was the EYFS children who did absolutely brilliantly in the sack race. They bounced like kangaroos! Both year groups joined the egg and spoon race which was lots of fun. The sprints were at the end of the event and what fast runners we had! The best thing about all of the events was that all of Tregantle Class took part with great sportsmanship and had smiles on their faces throughout. We finished our sports day with a picnic on the field and a disco. What an incredible day!

We've been learning about life under the sea. We started by talking about the creatures we know that live in the sea. We then looked at some images and named the creatures. We talked about what we already knew about them and learnt some new facts. We then explored using different materials and techniques to create sea creatures.

We painted pictures of sea creatures and talked about the facts we had found out about them. We also explored using different tools on a drawing app to create sea creature pictures. The first thing we did was choose an appropriate background for under the sea. We then chose colours and sizes for the brush according to what we were drawing. We also used different tools such as the glitter brush. We were able to try things out and change our minds by using the undo tool.

We practised our fine motor skills by drawing patterns. We tried to draw our patterns so that the lines were really close together but didn’t touch each other. After we’d practised we were then challenged to draw patterns on a fish. We had to try to draw the lines really close together and we had to try to draw different patterns in each section of the fish. All the children showed an amazing amount of focus during this activity and were very proud of their completed fish.

We've also been practising our writing skills by writing about some of the sea creatures. We learnt about the problems sea creatures are facing due to plastic pollution. We looked at some images of various creatures in trouble due to plastic. We talked about what we could see and how we thought this may have happened. We then focused on what we could do to help. We linked this back to our previous learning about recycling and also talked about the importance of not dropping litter.

We investigated which materials floated and which sank. We then used some of our recycling to make boats to carry some of our animals in the water tray.

The theme for Show and Tell next week is: Your favourite photograph. Please bring the photograph in on Thursday morning or if you wish to email a photo please send to rhorn@pelyntprimary.co.uk by 8:40am on Thursday.

Looe Primary Academy   Residential time

The residential and day trip season has well and truly arrived at Looe Primary!  Our Year 6 pupils enjoyed 3 nights and 4 days at Hendra near Newquay last week, supported by Kernow Sports and Leisure, one of our sports providers.  As you can see, they got up to all sorts of activities, including segway, body boarding, adventure challenges and a day trip to Camel Creek.  Even the staff got in on the act at the silent disco with evidence of Mrs Higgins dancing away with the instructors!  The staff were very proud of the children and hopefully they will have some lovely memories of their last few weeks at Looe Primary School.

Our Year 5 children will enjoy their residential this week and the Year 4 children recently enjoyed a visit to Longleat for 2 nights and a trip to Cheddar Gorge on the way home.  For the other year groups it has been a season of some wonderful visits to local venues, including the beaches in and around Looe, Plymouth University, the Sardine Factory/Heritage Centre etc.

We are now all eagerly anticipating the Year 6 drama production in the next few weeks - before we know it, it will be the end of the school year.  Where did all that time go?

Making Delicious Scones
Friday 28th June

This week we have been learning about how to make scones. We have ordered instructions and then written some of our own. After this we have been able to make sweet and savory scones. The best bit was definitely tasting them at the end.

Hello Everyone,

We had a great day on Monday. Our outdoor learning day was focussed around British birds.

The children enjoyed learning about the design and purposes of feathers, using the story: ‘Feathers are not just for flying.’ We observed and compared a wide range of different feathers.

We also learnt about the features, characteristics and bird calls of different British birds and found several examples of these in the outside area. We have started to create a weatherproof chart that will remain outside, which contain paintings and descriptions of birds that may be found in the outdoor area.

We also enjoyed a scavenger hunt, where we tried to find as many clues as we could, to prove that birds visit the outside area.

As you can see from the picture, some of us were exhausted by all of this learning.

Mrs Fitzsimmons
